Johanna M. Costigan is Associate Director of Research at the Paulson Institute. In this role, she writes on Paulson Institute areas of concern such as biodiversity, green finance, and conservation. Using her Chinese language skills and experience working in US-China relations, she supports the Executive Director in diversifying PI’s efforts. She also manages engagement initiatives and research projects, including working with external partners and counterparts, and collaborates with the Communications Department to regularly disseminate research and global policy developments germane to PI’s areas of interest.

Previously, she held editorial and research roles at the United Nations, Trivium China, the Asia Society Policy Institute, Stanford University’s DigiChina, the National Committee on US-China Relations, and other organizations. She has an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA from Bard College, where she double majored in East Asian Studies, focusing on Chinese language and literature and Written Arts. Her work has been published in ForbesLos Angeles Review of Books China Channel, Foreign Policy, China Books Review, Rest of World, Project Syndicate, ChinaFile, Nikkei Asia, The Diplomat, and others.
