Residents of Beijing have all noticed bluer skies this year – especially during the recent military parade – and we hear a lot about the possible reasons for this trend. What’s really behind the blue skies? In this Beijing Energy Network talk, Paulson Institute Associate Director of Research Anders Hove presented a data-driven analysis of the issue that looks beyond the local level of PM2.5 and into the deeper economics and atmospheric science behind the changes taking place.
The aim of the analysis is to understand not only whether the trend of bluer skies is sustainable, but whether further improvements can be achieved without just “shutting everything down” in the factory towns that ring Beijing. Hove also gave the audience an exclusive preview of original air quality modeling research conducted by the Paulson Institute and Tsinghua University that helps demonstrate which sectors can make the biggest contribution to improving air quality going forward.
